Wireless Network Adapters – The Basics

A Wireless network adapter is fairly common and used every day around the world. Whether you turn on your laptop or use any modern gaming system, it has a wireless network adapter in it. What exactly is a wireless network adapter? A wireless network adapter lets any computer join a wireless LAN. Wireless network adapters have both a built-in receiver and radio transmitter. Also, each adapter uses 802.11g, 802.11a, or 802.11b wifi standards. There are many different types of wireless network adapters, and they are not limited to one type. Here are a few different types:

1. PCI Wireless network adapter – This type of wireless network adapter is very common in desktops. PCI means “Peripheral Component Interconnect,” which is very typical for connecting devices to a computer’s CPU (central processing unit). PCI is most commonly used in desktop computers. Basically, all you have to do is plug a wireless network adapter into a desktop’s PCI slot, and you should have a functioning wireless network adapter.

2. PC card adapter – Even if you have a laptop and you want a wireless network adapter, it does not mean that you are out of luck. There can be a number of reasons why you need a wireless network adapter for your laptop. What if the wireless network card that you already had overheated? What if it malfunctioned for a different reason? What if you did not want to replace it? Or maybe its as simple as you want a better wireless network adapter for your laptop. All of these are perfectly good reasons to go ahead and purchase a wireless network adapter for your laptop. A decent wireless network adapter for your laptop can be purchased for a fairly low price, so there is no reason why you should not go ahead and buy one.

3. Wireless USB Network Adapter – A wireless USB network adapter is the most commonly used wireless network adapter for laptops. I myself have even replaced the wireless card that came with my laptop with a simple USB wireless network adapter. Wireless USB network adapters are great because they are cheap and affordable. I can easily fit a few in my pocket, which just goes to show how compact they are. Do not doubt their size, as they can pack quite the punch. When I switched to a USB adapter, I had a better connection with my wifi as opposed to as when I actually used the wireless card that came with my laptop. A wireless usb network adapter is not limited for use with only laptops. If you have an older xbox 360 like I do, then it can not connect to my wifi at home wirelessly. I bought the official wireless network adapter from Microsoft and it works wonders.

4. Wireless Gaming Adapters – These adapters are typically used with gaming consoles that lack a wireless way to connect to your WIFI connection. A wireless gaming adapter can connect to your router wireless and provide you with a way to play online anywhere in your home. It is very convenient, but sometimes these adapters can cost a bit more on top of your wallet.
